Artist Research: Nick Waplington
My Own Images |
Nick Waplington is a prime example of a journey photographer. Although I didn't use his photo's for much inspiration in my own experimentation it is worth knowing what else you can do with journey photography and this photographer has some elements of street photograph in his photo's by taking pictures of the immediate surroundings and the people he saw on the way to his grandfather's house in Nottingham which he visited regularly. The subject matter he would usually choose to capture was Family, Friends and Neighbours of his grandfather and show off the different lifestyles in Nottingham as he was based in New York. I didn't get much inspiration from him but I did use one skill that he often uses and that's to take a picture of my immediate surroundings that are interesting.

These photos were taken during the summer when I went on a trip to Sal in Cape Verde which is a small island off the Northwest coast of Africa. Here I went out to see many of the locals and their way of life and how different they're lives are compared to mine. I went to the main fishing docks, the beach and some shanty towns in the middle of the desert as there was some very deprived areas. I went to many other tourist sights such as natural pools that I got a few photo's of for my project. Some of the photo's were taken when the locals brought in all the fish they caught on the day. The photo's are all taken through the day making the lighting very bright in the majority of the photo's generally all my photo's are in focus and have a main subject with not much going on in the background.
Single Image Evaluation |
This photo was taken in a open water lake in cape verde. In frame you can see the ocean and the whole lake with the very blue coloured lake. This shows the landscape well. I took inspiration from Kilian Schoenberger who is another photographer that I worked on in my 'Natural World' unit by capturing the landscape and the bright colours that he also focuses on in his images.
